Support 40B law in the Commonwealth
Show your support for the campaign to protect the Affordable Housing Law. VOTE NO on … . .
CDCSB is part of a coalition fighting to protect the state’s affordable housing law also known as Chapter 40B, or the “Comprehensive Permit”. The law has produced 80% of the affordable housing units in Massachusetts outside of major cities. More then 58,000 homes have been created for working families, seniors, and people with disabilities all over the state because of this law. In South Berkshire County every new affordable housing unit built in the last ten years has used Chapter 40B for permitting; it is THE statute that makes “smart growth, higher density housing in our town centers” possible. Repealing the affordable housing law would immediately halt the creation of housing that is affordable to seniors and working families in many communities across the Commonwealth. Critics of Chapter 40B, who claim developers have abused its caps on profits, have collected enough signatures to put a measure to repeal the law on November ballot. The coalition fighting the repeal effort includes civic, business, religious and civil rights groups and AARP. Housing is the single largest expense for many older people, especially those who rent. Thanks to Massachusetts citizens the proposed ‘No on 40-B’ failed at the voting booths this past November. It went down by a 3:1 margin in Berkshire County, and by a 2:1 margin state-wide.
